Acid Reflux-Friendly Drink Recipes

First Thing’s First: Alcohol… Yay or Nay?

As we discussed in a previous blog, I’ll Drink to That: Choosing Alcohol That Doesn’t Cause Acid Reflux, it’s usually best to avoid alcohol entirely if you suffer from acid reflux. However, the team at the Tampa Bay Reflux Center knows that that’s not always the fun choice! For this reason, we’ve come up with some of the most low-risk alcoholic beverages that you can try on a night out on the town.

Keep in mind that everyone reacts differently to different ingredients, and not all of these drink options might be right for you. Keep in mind your individual triggers and ensure that you avoid those, as well.

So, What Alcoholic Drink Can I Drink With Acid Reflux?

General Rules of Thumb

As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, like 10 Foods That Trigger Acid Reflux, you’ll want to avoid the following: citrus, carbonation, chocolate, high-fat, caffeine, and peppermint. Dairy also causes heartburn for some people. So, can we make alcoholic drinks that don’t contain any of these ingredients?

Drink Option #1: Vodka or Gin Martini

If you’re looking for something to sip on that doesn’t sacrifice flavor, vodka martinis or gin martinis are great choices. Make sure not to ask for a “dirty” martini, because that will likely include citrus or olive juice. Your best bet is to get a martini with a twist of lemon or orange peel – this will be safe because the alcohol is just extracting natural oils rather than acidic, citrus juices.

Drink Option #2: Spiked Juices

So, what can you mix with vodka for acid reflux?

Since vodka is a good, safe bet, you can spike pretty much anything with it. For example, spiked cranberry juice would be easy on your stomach, while providing you with some of those “social drinking” vibes. You can also spike other juices if you’d like – just avoid citrus juices. Remember: you can still garnish with citrus peel for that elegant feeling.

Drink Option #3: Some Whiskey Drinks

Whiskey is also a good option for people who suffer from heartburn, so drinks like a Manhattan, the Godfather, or an apple cider whiskey cocktail are great options.

What Drink Should I Drink When I Have Acid Reflux

If you start to get reflux actively while drinking, you’ll know it’s time to take a step back. Ethyl alcohol in and of itself is a trigger for reflux. Try pausing on your martini and drinking a glass of water slowly – maybe even get some crackers or bread into your belly. See how your body reacts to this before you have any more alcohol.

At the end of the day, it’s your choice whether you drink alcohol or not – just don’t let peer pressure sentence you to a night of pain and suffering. You can be smart about your alcoholic choices if you are dedicated enough!
